God Looks at the Heart
A Devotional on David, Grace, and the Power of a Repentant Heart
The last page of my Bible study today really hit me.
It’s a truth we all need to hear and remember — especially in a world that constantly focuses on appearances, status, and perfection.
Today’s study focused on King David, through the lens of two powerful verses:
1 Samuel 16:7 (NIV):
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
Acts 13:22 (NIV):
After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’
These verses are a reminder that while humans judge by what’s on the outside, God sees what’s within. He knows our hearts — our character, our desires, our faith. David wasn’t chosen to be king because of his appearance, strength, or status. In fact, he was the youngest, smallest, and seemingly the least likely among his brothers. But God looked past all that and chose him.
Not because he was perfect — but because his heart was in the right place.
One line from the study really stuck with me:
“David experienced deep pain as a result of his sin, but his story still provides encouragement and hope for us. It displays tragedy and brokenness but shows that God can still work for good in the midst of it all. And best of all, God didn’t leave David on his own to figure it out.”

If you don’t know David’s story, here’s a quick recap:
David was a shepherd boy, handpicked by God to be Israel’s king. He had a heart for the Lord. But as king, David messed up in a major way. He committed adultery. Then, to cover it up, he arranged the death of an innocent man. It was ugly, tragic, and heartbreaking.
But then something beautiful happened.
David repented.
He confessed.
He turned back to God.
And God forgave him.
David’s life is a testament to the fact that God doesn’t give up on us. Even in our lowest, darkest moments, He sees our hearts. When we turn to Him, He meets us with mercy, grace, and the strength to begin again.
Maybe you’ve felt like you’ve gone too far.
Maybe you’re waiting until you “get it together” before you come back to God.
But let me tell you — you don’t need to wait.
You’ll never be perfect.
You’ll never have it all figured out.
But God isn’t waiting on perfection — He’s waiting on your heart.
So today, take the first step.
Run to Him.
He will meet you with open arms.
It won’t always be easy.
Healing takes time.
Growth takes work.
But He will walk with you every step of the way.
He will make your path straight. (Proverbs 3:5–6)
Reflection Questions:
Are you focusing more on outward appearance than your inward heart?
What’s something you need to bring to God in repentance today?
How can David’s story encourage you in your current season?
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for seeing my heart. Thank You for Your mercy and forgiveness, even when I fall short. Help me to turn to You in repentance, to trust Your process, and to follow You fully. Make my heart more like Yours. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
